The Browning School

Prestigious Academy for Boys

The Browning School is a prestigious academy for boys, founded in 1888 by John A Browning. The traditional curriculum helps promote the academic growth and support of the boys intellectually, physically and emotionally from their Pre Primary years all the way through to Form VI. Located in the very heart of New York City, Browning is able to make use of the city’s endless resources.

In 1920, Browning was succeeded as headmaster by Arthur Jones, who moved the school from its original location on West 55th Street to East 62nd Street, and saw to it that the list of extracurricular activities was expanded. 1948 saw Jones retiring and Lyman B Tobin, who has been teaching at Browning for nearly 30 years, taking over as the school’s third headmaster. In 1952, upon Tobin’s retirement, Charles W Cook was named headmaster, and remained in the position for36 years. The school grew rapidly, and after intensive fundraising Browning bought the carriage house adjoining the school and rebuilt it. The new building opened in 1960, and the school’s expansion continued in 1967 with the building of a larger gymnasium and then again in the 70 when they acquired an interest in the building next door.

1988 saw Stephen M Clement becoming Brownings 5th headmaster. Currently the school has over 370 students, more than double its size some fifty years ago, but still the school continues to emphasize small classes and paying close personal attention to the students. The school has added a new library, four new science labs, art studios and additional classrooms. In addition to all of this, Browning has become affiliated with The Hewitt School, Marymount School, Nightingale-Bamford School and Interschool. The first three schools as well as Browning benefit from shared academic opportunities, artistic activities and social activities for boys and girls. Interschool is a consortium of a total of 8 schools which enhances academic, extracurricular and administrative sharing. The Browning School makes it their mission to create a diverse school community where all members can be safe, respected and valued as individuals.  In actively promoting a diverse learning environment, the children’s intellectual, social and emotional growth is well taken care of. Browning seeks to transcend mere tolerance of difference; Browning seeks to celebrate those differences, the varied appearances, abilities, views and values that make up our community.

Browning’s extremely selective admissions process has only a 30% acceptance rate. Students are not admitted for the 11th and 12th grades, and are very rarely admitted for 10th grade. Pre Primary admissions close nearly a year prior to the year of entry, due to the extremely high demand for children to get spots at the school. Every grade accommodates more or less 30 boys, many of whom started and will finish their full schooling at Browning. The school is private, functioning under one of New York’s nonprofit statutes. Browning is now controlled by a board of trustees and the school administrated by the headmaster.

The upper high school curriculum is as diverse as the students, and will ground the boys firmly in all the need to know to move forward. English, Math, Science, History, Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish or French) Classic Languages (Latin), Music, Art, Drama, Technology and P. E. are the subjects offered. Browning also offers an extensive sports program with soccer and cross country in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball, track, tennis and golf in spring time.
